THE ANARCHIVING GAME
PRE-LAUNCH
A talk between Lene Vollhardt and Erik Bordeleau with Beth McCarthy, Alessando Y. Longo, Jacob Hünh and the audience to cruise through the alpha version of our recently initiated Anarchiving Game dApp.
The Anarchiving Game is a shared contract deployed on the Zora crypto-network that enables Anarchivists to mint, share and collect fragments relative to The Sphere’s creative journey. For the occasion, we have invited three of our dearest friends and long-term collaborators, to mint some fragments related to their experience with the Sphere and beyond. With them, we discussed what it means to experiment with web3 protocols to create a decentralized collective memory, and how this attempt at self-collecting, or anarchiving collective intelligence matters in our current political context.

WE DRAW A MAGIC CIRCLE
AND GROW AT THE SPEED OF TRUST
WE DRAW A MAGIC CIRCLE AND GROW AT THE SPEED OF TRUST is an ongoing workshop about designing performative (smart) contracts for the live arts. Each guest in this interview series was asked to share their thoughts around the following questions:
- What type of agreement should be concluded between the Sphere’s seed performers and the incoming artists in order to foster a safe and generative ecosystem for creative iterations and derivations?
- What if we could design protocols for interaction with (or without) an NFT-based system of incentives and royalties that would not only protect the artists themselves, but also ensure the growth of derivative artistic lineages & milieus?
- How could these protocols involve the Sphere community as a whole? What kind of artful mechanisms for collective accountability and other relational techniques should they be embedding, for both prospective and retrospective purposes?
What is most valuable is also what is most vulnerable. This applies all the more so to the Live Art Network Derivative (LAND) we are terraforming. Its value, in the last instance, does not reside so much in the techno-promises of our digital infrastructure, or in the alleged impartiality of our formal voting mechanism, as in the effective games of collaboration this emergent ecosystem is setting in motion. Our objective is to redistribute the risks and opportunities of making art. This is made possible by engendering the propitious conditions for an ethos of speculative generosity to flourish and irrigate this ecology of artful funding practices. The quality of the agreements, rituals and social techniques embedded in the Sphere’s relationscape will directly impact the well-functioning of the Sphere as a generative commons, but also its value as a web3 community-based asset in formation.

“The Sphere” is an international group embodying cybernetic poetics from head to toe.
At ConTempo Festival 2022 we use methods of LARP, dreaming, crypto, NFT’s, writing, dance and VR to induce states towards a reality yet unlived. How we in The Sphere would like to organize the future, is deeply informed by circus and a celebration of the precarity of liveness in art. The desire to change an unsustainable reality for artists in late-stage capitalism is what drove us to the ongoing path of digital soul-searching: and we are doing this together in real live!
In 2033, we seized hyperspace with the help of new languages that we decoded through art, collaboration, and cryptography (also known as documentation). We found intuitive ways to commune with both non-human agents, gods, and human agents that can be either pooled together or have fluid identities. We found ways to interact through Art and crypto that could sustain whole communities.
Enter loving Spheres during ConTempo Festival 2022. Delve into an interactive Artwork that you can experience at any time during 2 days. Watch unfolding performances of artful financial assetization, some of which turn into NFTs while you’re there. Let’s explore what finance can be in 2033. Together and autonomously, but not without snacks, music, and drinks.

Experiments in the Sphere’s Design of New Artistic Archives
In collaboration with ith Maison des Jonglages, Guillaume Martinet, and Xenia Bannuscher.
30 September 2021 – Paris
Maison des Jonglages, in Houdremont Centre Culturel, 11 avenue du Général Leclerc 93120 La Courneuve

Anarchive Lab #1 (April, 2021) explored the relation of fragments of process with the process of creation. It did this through a game called The Anarchivists set up between live circus artists in Stockholm and an online group of diagrammatic thinkers and artists.
Anarchive Lab #2 plays a different game, strikes a different tone in order to research the anarchive from a different angle of experience. Anarchive Lab #2 explores the anarchive created in derivative spread from product creation in circus, and asks, “how does one write new or slightly new creation from finished work?” If the first lab asked, “where do performances go?” then this next lab asks, “how should performances go on?” On Sept 30th, 2021, a group will gather in Paris on the occasion of the CircusNext conference. The focus will be on 2 artists, each holding their own finished work. A month prior, each artist created a “package,” a gift basket or time capsule of fragments from their finished work, and then sent it to the other artist. Each artist then had a month to create work (or recreate work, and therein lies the rub) from the other’s package.
On the 30th, we gather in Paris to perform a kind of miniature unboxing festival, with an aim toward some kind of open source creative world and economy that yet can still recognize and support the works and artists that begin flows of provenance, as well as those who maintain the forward movement of creative power in our worlds.
Schedule
Food, water, at lab for participants : fruits, biscuits, coffee, tea, bottles of water. The Cité Internationale Café is nearby for additional snacks and drinks.

SWEDISH BIENNIAL OF PERFORMING ARTS
The Sphere is a way to fundamentally revolutionize how the performing arts industry relates to production, value, copyright, and creative processes.
In this conference, we present an EU-funded research project led by 11 partner organizations – festivals, cultural centers, incubators, and universities – from Europe and North America, under the leadership of the Swedish circus company Saloranta & de Vylder. The Sphere is a digital infrastructure for self-organization within contemporary circus and the redistribution of power and money, from administration to art. From centralized to decentralized.
How does it work? That’s what we’ll find out over the next three years. A conversation with the founders of the project.

Who renders whom capable of what, and at what price, borne by whom?
Donna Haraway, Staying with the Trouble
You see it everywhere these days. Digital and not so digital tribes organizing themselves to exit from a system stuck in zombie mode and forcing us into a zero-sum competitive game; emergent, metamorphic network collectives aiming to generate collaborative environments that recognize a wider array of value contributions and sharing of resources for the construction of commons-oriented economies; and so on.
The question of valuation is central to this civilizational shift. But it is also a delicate one because (surplus) value measurements happen to be highly performative, that is: they tend to modify the very values they are meant to account for. Or to paraphrase Donna Haraway’s provocative and staying-with-the-trouble insight: it matters what worlds world worlds; and it matters what measures measure measures.
Blockchains and a wide array of cryptographic computational tools allow for new modes of collective valuation and self-organization at scale. Creatively iterating in the following of P2P Foundation’s seminal work on “Accounting for Planetary Survival”, this Sphere Lab session will be dedicated to the study and experiment of different practices in contributive and prospective accounting. Through study and working sessions, a special LARP experiment and a speculative design exercise addressing issues of political organizing in the ecosystem of performing art practices, this Lab aims to contribute to the prototyping of commons-oriented and techno-socially augmented organizations for the (near) future.

“You only get it by passing it on (…) it can’t be owned”
Introductory Mind Mapping Session
How do we account otherwise? How do we step out of the bulimic and neurotic double entry accounting system that has dominated our economic life for centuries? How do we integrate in our future accounting systems an interspecies and cross-generational “return on investment”? How can we account for the in-between when that which we give (art?) can’t be owned? When it is an extension of both the giver and the receiver? What other economic systems can we tentatively prefigure as we explore web 3.0 affordances and recursivities?
This session is an invitation to collectively mind map current and prospective ecologies of funding, including elements such as: Universal basic income (UBI), gift economies reloaded, radical taxation schemes, Staatskunst, or the art of interfacing with public funding, collective fractal ownership for financing milieus rather than individuals, FOMO, FUD, YOLO and other affective tonalities of (degen) finance, digital soul searching, cosmo-commoning for the Anthropocene, etc., playfully adopting frontend approaches to navigate the positive unconscious – the financial backend – of social life.

In two months the first electric cars are supposed to roll from conveyor belts at Tesla’s Gigafactory in Grünheide. The car manufacturer was forced to stop further construction for two weeks at the beginning of April because sewage pipelines were laid through a drinking watershed without proper authorisation from the local environmental agency. Despite all of this, the local minister for environment from the Green party seems to uphold a relationship of undeserved trust towards Tesla. Amidst concerns over the factory’s water consumption and its location within a local water protection area, pedestrians in the city centre of Berlin have found fish and bird carcassas floating atop the river Spree. Some say they may have been carried downstream from Grünheide, as the part of the Spree closest to the Gigafactory has been tinted an unhealthy shade of pink…
Strangely enough, at this particular point in time, a community on discord has been engaged in a heated discussion: A collection of openParC NFTs has been minted to the platform OpenSea by a mysterious creator called Goldman $nax. The page lists 175 items with an average price of 100 ETH. The description reads: “This is the proposal of a cutting-edge landart project. The property of Tesla’s fourth Gigafactory is about to be sold to the highest bidder by the government of Brandenburg. openParC is the proposal to collectively buy the property and program it in a distributed fashion. Cyberrangers of the world unite!”
Goldman $nax led the market in 2019 in trading tactics and decentralised funding. Codifying the unconditional mutation of the undead corpse called 21st century late capitalism, our tool CUMmons™ became the first-choice funding alternative to the conventional attention economy in the art world. After a period of rest and rehabilitation, Goldman $nax have awakened from their cryogenic sleep chamber, eager to unleash another radical transition project.
Is this real or just a scammy conspiracy? If you’ve been wondering this too, join the discord community dedicated to decipher this phishy openParC story. openParC’s rangers will provide the necessary assistance for you to mint your access to special interest zones.

3pm to 5pm CET
OpenParC LARP Assembly
Online debrief session (open to everyone)
The spokespeople of openParC’s special interest groups will summarise which verdict the community has reached. Negotiating the wobbly terrain between disaster capitalism, the gold rush mentality fusing the spheres of crypto and art, as well as the global destruction of ecosystems, they will each give a statement. Each statement will be open to contestation, discussion and further extension by all participants at the assembly.
Cutting through the thicket of what openParC promises to be and what it can become, it will become clear who is in it for real, who will jack out and who was planning to sabotage the project since the very beginning. Even if you didn’t take part in the openParC hacklab, this might be of special interest to you. ╰(◕‿◕)╯✿

A new generation of artists is getting involved in the blockchain space, generating companies and other cooperative endeavors with an artistic toolset. Art in this specific context is ambiguously signaling both the generative informality of social life, and the process of discovering new ways of formalizing our social capacities. What are the different techno-social components defining these new organizational forms that combine the immutability of a shared past with the programmability of a freely commonized future?
APRIL 2021
Anarchive
Lab #1

April 7-9, 2021, Stockholm & Online
How can the soul of a performance (and not just its technical specifications) be made fungible, shareable, dynamic and collective?
The Sphere is a new platform for the performing arts. In the Sphere’s first Anarchive Lab, we will set up two games of experience that interplay with one another: one live experience, on the floor in Stockholm, and another online through a game called The Anarchivists. In The Anarchivists, online players are invited to take up the role of “the artist formerly known as audience,” to watch our live feed of circus experimentations on the theme of archive and iteration, and while doing so, to create multimedia cards that capture fragments of the happening, that cut across boundaries of bodies and tricks, and yet also utilize those powerful formalisms (each card is constrained to a single google doc page). While performers explore the limits and affordances of body notation, online players cast their cards in rounds, with the ‘winning’ cards passed to Stockholm to influence subsequent body-performance experimentations during the lab. The purpose for both live and online experiences is to develop an experimental approach to the packaging and de-packaging of live-performance material, developing notation logics that can seed future performances at subsequent labs, and the Berlin Circus Festival.
“Practice moves at the pace of a problem. Anarchiving, as a practice for emergent collectivity, draws out the contours of a [artistic, economic] problem, working not to solve it but to complexify it, to give it the force that can draw it into expression differently.”
—Erin Manning

Percolating Questions
- How best can audiences be involved in producing fragments from past performances that are valuable for future performances?
- How does this empowerment change their experience?
- How does it change the experience of artistic creation, its quality and its economy?

READINGS
Read Erin Manning on the concept of anarchive:
Anarchive, Anarchiving. Verb, Noun.
Fragment 1
Process philosopher, transdisciplinary artist, and co-founder of Montreal’s Senselab (at Concordia University), Erin Manning has been engaged in collective thinking about “anarchiving” for 10+ years.
Anarchiving is a core concept in the Sphere’s plans for world collaboration. Anarchiving means collecting and saving what looks like waste in the creative process in order to – like compost – enrich the creative ecosystem in the long run. Anarchiving – still like composting – is too complex to produce oneself on purpose and with control: one can only learn how to make conditions for it to happen!

- Anarchiving “refuses to draw strong lines between bodies and the ecologies that compose them”
- Anarchiving “is a practice for inventing new ways of becoming social”
- To anarchive is to “[c]reate techniques for augmenting complexity such that new flows reorient blockages”
- To anarchive is to “listen to the rhythms of the parastrata—‘sides’ and ‘besides’”
- To anarchive, “don’t create an inside”
- To anarchive, “note what stands out. Note the ways in which the dominant tendency seeks to take over. Note the ways in which you might be moved to archive the tendency. Don’t archive it”
- Anarchiving “is not a call to do more. It is a call to connect to what is already doing. Anarchiving traces what reverberates in that doing”
- The feel of the anarchive is one in which you “[d]raw for yourself an errant cartography. Work on the bias. Follow the inflection, reach-lean-keen. Touch the contours”
- Anarchiving is “attunement…to how futurity bends the past”
- “Anarchiving is a way”
- “Anarchival practices amplify the minor that runs through the archive.”
- Think of the Digital Soul and how it sends out missions of future and past potential to artists, venues, audiences, companies: Anarchiving “recognizes the need to register this minor tendency. The registering is not an archiving. It is a culling that pulls from the future a tendency, an orientation on process… From a line grows a spiral”
- In the anarchive (and in The Sphere), “as emergent quality of existence, the event values only its capacity to seed itself forward”
- Anarchiving “does not evaluate. It experiments” because “too often, evaluation sticks to what is already known”
- In the anarchive, “compositions are created each time there is a committed practice”
- In the anarchive, “[p]ractice moves at the pace of a problem. [Anarchiving], as a practice for emergent collectivity, draws out the contours of a [artistic, economic] problem, working not to solve it but to complexify it, to give it the force that can draw it into expression differently”
All quotes in Fragment 1 are taken from Dr. Manning’s forthcoming book out of Duke University Press, For A Pragmatics of the Useless.

CRYPTOECONOMIC DESIGN LAB #1
You Can’t be Alone in a Liquidity Pool:
Introduction to the Sphere’s Cyber-Infrastructure
Open office session with Curve Labs & Friends
APRIL 22nd + 23rd 2021
As a collaborative and emergent web3-based infrastructure, The Sphere is a call to challenge and experiment with the traditional frameworks of cultural production. In the spirit of the open source movement, The Sphere wants to enable every agent in the performing art ecosystem – artists, cultural professionals, audience, cultural organisations as well as a wide range of sympathisers and other potential stakeholders, to participate directly in the shaping of new organizational, aesthetic and economic forms.
This open office session will be an occasion to present the current development of the Sphere’s cyber-infrastructure, as well as opening up a space for collective imagineering around the potential for web3-based derivative art communities. In sympoetic partnership with Curve Labs, The Sphere is catalysing a “quadratic” alliance with 4 key partners – Gnosis, Furtherfield/CultureStake, Black Swan and Spectre – in order to model and implement a radically innovative commons 3.0 for circus and the performing arts.
Web3 organizations built on open, trustless and permissionless networks will empower a new generation of derivative art collectives with capabilities of distributing and coordinating fractal ownership of artworks and artistic processes among a wide range of stakeholders at unprecedented scaling capacity and low overhead cost. We hope that these new organizational capacities will generate new funding strategies and modes of participation in commons-oriented ventures, addressing systemic precarity and allowing for new forms of prospective accounting that better address the qualitative and fluid nature of collaborations in the arts.
Schedule
First Day (April 22nd)
Quadratic Alliance for Web3 Art Collective

Second day (April 23rd)
“You can’t be Alone in a Liquidity Pool”: On Derivative Art Communities
14h30 – 15h15:
Introduction: Fractional Ownership as Differential Skin in the Game
What could fractional ownership mean for web3 art collectives? How can they style themselves an economization process capable of interfacing with the dominant economy in self-sustaining ways? What kind of collective enrichment processes can we imagine that go beyond the frenzy of accumulation? This session will activate the collective diagramming online workshop through the reception of fragments from the Sphere Anachive Lab (held April 7th-9th 2021).
15h15 – 16h30:
Pierre Guillet de Monthoux: Curating Capitalism
Curating has evolved into much more than creating interesting exhibitions, promoting artists, and selling artwork. Art worlds have fused with business worlds and transformed capitalism from the inside-out. Curating capitalism implies new ways of navigating and curating the art field far beyond a simple commercialization of art and artists.

MONEYLAB BERLIN: THE SPHERE
Inspired by the recent innovations in the field of DLT (Blockchain) and P2P contributive economies, The Sphere is a transdisciplinary research-creation project for the development of a digital infrastructure for self-organization in the performing arts. It allows for different actors of the performing arts ecosystem to initiate creative collaborations and implement new funding strategies. This session will be the occasion to creatively explore 3 constitutive dimensions of the Sphere’s commons-oriented approach:
- The Anarchive: a dynamic, process-oriented archive of artistic works that operates as a digital common repository for artistic knowledge and practice;
- A contributive accounting and IP management system to facilitate collaboration within decentralized open value networks;
- A cryptoeconomic interface, developed in collaboration with Curve Labs, enabling liquid ownership and dynamic governance structures adapted to the coming economy. A participatory online session by Erik Bordeleau and The Sphere Crew.
NOVEMBER 2020
The Sphere as
high-level play
Collaborative game-play and development session
A new lab research area is being assembled with a focus on the research and development of engagement methodologies, value identification and intrinsic motivation for The Sphere project. The lab aims to provide value to the project by identifying viable pathways for collaboration while adding a visible and navigable gestalt for the systemic complexity of overlapping and dynamic constellations. This is done through the creation and tracking of stakeholder pathways and the way in which one artist incorporates the outcomes of other artists and reworks these into new constellations and new works of art.

Eugenio Battaglia facilitated a Lego serious play session. Our hands know things that our minds often ignore. Building landscape models together with Lego opened up the gate of imagination and collective fabulation in truly unsuspected way. This playful session worked as a catalyst and an accelerator – and well, it just was a lot of fun! Through story-making and playing out various possible scenarios, the group activated a discovery process that deepens understanding, sharpens insight, and made us bond together at a another level.
